Caps & Gowns FAQs

How do I get a cap and gown?
It´s simple, there is no advanced order necessary for student candidates. All students are encouraged to buy and/or pick up a cap and gown at the Grad Fair. Undergraduate students will buy a "souvenir" cap and gown designed for one-time use, after which you keep them – need to collect and return. Masters and doctoral graduates or faculty members will rent traditionally styled higher quality gowns that are fully fluted.

What´s a Keeper gown?
A "Keeper" or souvenir cap and gown is designed for one-time use, after which you keep them–no need to collect and return.

How do I know if my gown is a keeper or a rental?
All undergraduates will buy keeper gowns. All masters and doctoral graduates will have rental units. Also, the bag that your gown comes in will indicate whether it is a keeper or rental gown. You may also contact your Alumni Relations, BYU Bookstore, or Herff Jones representative for more information.

Can I purchase my rental regalia?
Please contact Jeff Stauffer (Herff Jones local sales representative) for information on purchasing a cap and gown.

Where do I pick up my cap and gown?
All students will pick up caps and gowns at the BYU Bookstore during Grad Fair–
Aug. 7 – 8 (Thursday and Friday)
3rd Floor of the BYU Bookstore
10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

What if I can´t make it to Grad Fair to pick up my cap and gown? The BYU Bookstore will temporarily carry caps and gowns Aug. 11-15. For information on regular business hours, call 801-422-2400.

Can I have someone else pick up my cap and gown rental?
Yes. This person must provide his or her picture ID at the pick-up area.

Where do I drop off my cap and gown rental after the graduation ceremonies?
Only faculty, masters and doctoral graduates need to drop off rental caps and gowns immediately following convocation. For your convenience, rental caps and gowns may be returned at the BYU Bookstore (3rd floor: Aug. 14-16) or the Hinckley Center (east circular driveway: Aug. 14-15) drop box.

Do I get to keep my tassel?
Yes, all students keep the tassel included with each cap and gown package. The tassel is the only part of the cap and gown "rental" a graduate is allowed to keep. Additional tassels, souvenir tassels, and other graduation products may be purchased at the BYU Bookstore.

Can I rent my cap and gown over the phone?
No phone orders will be taken. Only faculty need to pre-order regalia with a credit card at http://www.herffjones.com/college/byu.
