How do I purchase a cap and gown?
Order online at http://www.herffjones.com/byu until the pre-order deadline, or pre-order at the Grad Fair, which takes place ONLY for April graduation. If you miss the pre-order deadline and/or the Grad Fair, you can still order your cap and gown at the Hinckley Center one day prior to graduation, where there will be an inventory of stock available for purchase. See pricing and pick-up information below.
What if I missed the Grad Fair and/or the pre-order deadline?
Although you missed the early-bird discount, come to the Hinckley Center Assembly Hall the Wednesday of graduation week to pick up regalia. We will have bulk inventory of everything you need to walk in your graduation ceremonies.
What is the Grad Fair?
This event only applies to April graduation. The Grad Fair is a one-stop shop for graduation ceremony preparation. It occurs two months before April graduation and is hosted by the BYU Bookstore. Our cap and gown provider, Herff Jones, attends the Grad Fair to assist students with ordering caps and gowns, rings, announcements, stoles of gratitude, diploma frames, and other graduation accessories. The BYU Bookstore provides prizes and refreshments to celebrate your accomplishment.
If you order your cap and gown at the Grad Fair or any time before the pre-order deadline, you will receive an early-bird discount of $10 off the original price.
Note: The Grad Fair ONLY occurs in March before April graduation; for August graduation, please order online by the pre-order deadline to receive our early-bird discount.

Keep the tassel, but return the cap, gown and hood to the Hinckley Center or BYU Bookstore immediately following convocation.
Rental unit must be returned no later than noon on the scheduled date.

What is a keeper gown?
All bachelor degree gowns are keeper gowns. In contrast to a rental gown, a keeper gown is a gown you don’t have to return after graduation. You get to keep it as a souvenir of your graduation.
How do I know if my gown is a keeper or rental gown?
All undergraduate gowns are keeper gowns. This gown is blue in color. All masters and doctoral gowns are rental units. Rental gowns are black. Blue? It’s for you! Black? Bring it back! The bag that your gown comes in will indicate whether your gown is a keeper or rental gown.
How do I measure my cap size?
Only Master/Doctor caps are custom made; all undergraduate caps are one-size fits all. Master/Doctor graduates can click on the link on the main caps and gowns page and print off the instructions to measure the sizes for their custom made caps.
Do I get to keep my tassel?
Yes, all students keep the tassel included with each cap and gown package. If you are a Masters or PhD graduate, the tassel is the only part of the cap and gown rental package that you are allowed to keep. Undergraduates keep their caps, gowns, and tassels. If you would like to purchase souvenir tassels for yourself, your family, or your friends, you can find them in the men's department on the main floor of the BYU Bookstore.
Can I purchase my rental regalia?
Please contact Jeff Stauffer, the local Herff Jones sales representative, for information on purchasing a custom cap and gown. Call 801-652-7504 or email jstauffer@herffjones.com.
Where do I pick up my cap and gown?
All students and faculty will pick up caps and gowns at the Hinckley Center.
Where do I drop off my cap and gown rental after the graduation ceremonies?
Only faculty, master and doctoral graduates need to drop off rental caps and gowns following convocation. For convenience, rental caps and gowns may be returned at the BYU Bookstore 3rd floor customer service desk during regular business hours or at the Hinckley Center (east circular driveway) drop box by the Saturday following Commencement.
What is a "Stole of Gratitude"?
A stole is an optional accessory worn by the graduate during the commencement ceremony. After commencement, the graduate presents the stole of gratitude to someone who provided them with help or support, such as parents, relatives, or mentors. Immediately after graduation, the graduate removes the stole from his/her neck and places it around the neck of the recipient. More than one stole may be worn during commencement, symbolizing that the student was helped by multiple people. Stoles can be purchased at the BYU Bookstore in the men's department on the main floor for $18.99; they can also be purchased at the Hinckley Center during cap and gown distribution $18.99.
The BYU Bookstore also offers sashes/stoles for international students or study abroad participants, specialized to the country the student wants to represent at graduation. Sashes must be ordered at least a week in advance by special order through the BYU Bookstore only.
Is there any special regalia for students graduating with honors?
There is no special regalia to wear for graduating students receiving scholastic honors (http://saas.byu.edu/registrar/graduation/honors.php). Phi Kappa Phi honor cords are sold by Phi Kappa Phi (http://www.phikappaphi.org/web/Members/pkpgear.html).
Can I order my cap and gown over the phone?
We are unable to take any phone orders. Please order online by the pre-order deadline or at the Grad Fair (April Graduation), or come to distribution the week of graduation to order from our bulk inventory.
What payment methods do you take for students?
We accept cash, check, and all major credit and debit cards, including BYU Bookstore charge cards.
What payment method do you take for faculty orders?
We accept cash, check, and all major credit and debit cards, including BYU Bookstore charge cards, department cards and purchasing cards. Unfortunately, we cannot accept department account codes as our registers are not able to process these as a payment type. If you merely have a code as opposed to a physical card that we can swipe, you likely have a department code, which we can’t accept. We apologize for the inconvenience.
If I can’t make it can I have someone else buy/pick up my cap and gown? Do they need to bring anything?
Yes, another individual may pick up your cap and gown for you. If you have not pre-ordered, the person purchasing your cap and gown will need to know your cap and gown size, degree (B.S., B.A., etc.) and hood color (for master/doctor gowns only). If you have pre-ordered, the person picking up your cap and gown will need to show his or her photo ID at the Hinckley Center in order to obtain your regalia.
What if my cap and gown do not fit correctly?
Bring the item that doesn’t fit to the Hinckley Center on any of the distribution days and we will exchange it for a better fitting garment.
When is the best time to pick up my cap and gown?
The biggest rush and longest line during cap and gown distribution is on the morning of the first day. We suggest coming in the afternoon for shorter lines.
Is there any way to rent an undergraduate cap and gown?
There are no undergraduate rentals. All Bachelor gowns are yours to keep after graduation.
How do I purchase just a tassel?
Tassels can be purchased before graduation in the men's department of the BYU Bookstore for $9.99. You can also come to Hinckley Center during the cap and gown distribution and purchase it there for $9.99.
How do I purchase just a cap?
Bachelor Caps can be purchased at the Hinckley Center during the cap and gown distribution for $15.00.

How do I purchase other graduation items, such as thank you notes, rings, and diploma frames?
You can purchase frames and thank you notes at the BYU Bookstore or through the BYU Bookstore website. Additionally, you can purchase these items as well as class rings through BYU's Herff Jones website, which can be found at http://colleges.herffjones.com/college/byu/. Class rings are only available through Herff Jones.
Is there any type of dinner celebration for graduates?
This event applies only to April graduation. Graduates and their families can attend BYU Day Graduation Dinner and Celebration at the Hinckley Assembly Hall directly following Commencement. Tickets for this dinner and celebration are $20 per person. Due to limited seating in the Hinckley Center, tickets tend out for this event. Order tickets at http://alumni.byu.edu/byuday. Tickets to the BYU Day celebration will not be mailed. To receive your tickets, please check in at the guest registration table in the Hinckley Center after Commencement.
Y Bell Tradition
Immediately following Commencement, students traditionally gather on the Southwest corner of the Marriott Center to ring the Y Bell and celebrate graduation.
