BYU PARENTS PROGRAM

Parents Guide

Things to do in April-

  • Finals are coming up this month. Now is a very important time to offer support and encouragement to your student. This is a great time to remind your student to maintain a balance of healthy meals, regular exercise, and adequate rest in addition to their scholastic and social demands.

  • Many students take advantage of the warmer weather to explore Utah's beautiful mountains and canyons. Hiking and mountain biking can be a great, inexpensive hobby for BYU students and a good way to relieve stress. However, with finals approaching you may need to encourage your student to stay focused.

  • If your student does not have a chance to complete registration of their fall schedule, remind your student to obtain an updated copy of their Progress Report before going home so they can continue to work on their schedule on the Web through the summer. It is also helpful for students to talk with their advisors before going home for the summer.

  • If your student is planning on staying for spring term, classes begin April 29.

  • Some students worry about ending their freshmen year—leaving their friends and facing the challenges of moving home. Now may be a good opportunity to discuss these concerns.

  • Now that you and your students have made it through this first year, you may notice that your involvement in their lives will become less and less. Don't be offended; that's the way it's supposed to be. It's now times for your student to take on greater responsibility. Mistakes will be made along the way, but that's okay, too. You should feel good that you've helped bring your student this far.
