"The Complete Interview Guide" with Jason Scoffield

In July, BYU Connect had the privilege of partnering with Jason Scoffield, Chief Compliance Officer for Audax Group, for a webinar on mastering the interview process. Drawing from his extensive professional and personal experience, Jason shared practical advice to help students and alumni succeed at every stage of an interview—from preparation to follow-up.

1) Before the Interview Starts

Jason emphasized that preparation is key to a successful interview. He encouraged candidates to research the company, role, and interviewers, prepare thoughtful questions, and use AI as a tool to practice responses. He also highlighted the importance of planning ahead so candidates can arrive confident and prepared.

2) During the Interview

Jason shared advice for navigating in-person, virtual, and phone interviews. He encouraged candidates to focus on having genuine conversations rather than memorizing answers. While AI can help with preparation, he reminded attendees that employers want to get to know the real person behind the résumé. He also encouraged candidates to share their interests and experiences to help interviewers better understand who they are.

3) End of the Interview

Jason shared how candidates can leave a lasting impression and encouraged attendees not to become discouraged by rejection. Hiring decisions often involve factors outside a candidate’s control, and every interview provides valuable experience. He emphasized that practice is one of the best ways to build confidence and improve for future opportunities.
