"Beyond Graduation: Leveraging BYU Connect as an Alum" with Michael Johanson

In June, BYU Connect had the privilege of partnering with Michael Johanson, Executive Director of the BYU Alumni Association Board. Our discussion with Michael provided valuable insights on how BYU Connect can help alumni build valuable relationships, strengthen their networks, and create new opportunities for personal and career growth.

1) Mentoring, Networking and Opportunities: How do They Connect?

Michael shares how everyone already has a network around them and explains that networking is, at its core, an act of ministering. He emphasizes that loving our neighbors means getting to know them, building genuine relationships, and serving one another. These meaningful connections form the foundation of both effective networking and mentoring. Michael also shares how building meaningful connections have helped him find the right career and jobs.

2) How Can Alumni Use BYU Connect Effectively?

Michael explains that the best way to use BYU Connect, LinkedIn, and other networking platforms is by approaching them with curiosity and a willingness to ask questions. He encourages alumni to use these platforms to find people who can offer insights and answer questions, emphasizing that meaningful conversations can begin with just a 10- to 15-minute conversation and lead to valuable relationships.

3) Networking and Mentoring Through Different Life Stages

Michael concludes the webinar by encouraging those who may not have a traditional career path, including individuals seeking a new career, between jobs, or returning to the workforce after an extended break. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining relationships during every stage of life, reminding attendees that networking isn't transactional. Instead, he encourages alumni to nurture genuine connections, support those around them, and continue building relationships both inside and outside of professional settings.
