1. QUANTIFY, SIMPLIFY, AND APPLY YOUR EXPERIENCE

Amanda provided invaluable insights on effectively quantifying your achievements on your resume to make them stand out to potential employers. She emphasized the importance of showcasing measurable results and demonstrated how to translate your past experiences into clear, impactful statements that reflect your readiness for new job opportunities. Amanda's advice: think numbers and outcomes. Highlight specific achievements with data to back them up, such as percentage improvements, sales figures, or project completions.

2. CUSTOMIZE YOUR SKILLS TO ALIGN WITH YOUR PREFERRED CAREER

Amanda discussed strategies for identifying and highlighting skills on your resume that align with your target career. She shared personal examples of how she revised her own resume for specific job applications to better align with the required skills and qualifications. Amanda's tip: tailor your resume for each job application. Analyze the job description and adjust your resume to emphasize the skills and experiences most relevant to the position you're applying for.

3. UNDERSTAND WHAT COMPANIES LOOK FOR DURING THEIR QUICK SCAN

In the final segment, Amanda explained how to structure your resume to quickly convey your qualifications and suitability for the job to a hiring manager. She highlighted common mistakes to avoid, such as cluttered layouts, irrelevant information, and lack of focus, which could cause your resume to be overlooked during a company's quick scan. Amanda's suggestion: keep it clean and concise. Use clear headings, bullet points, and keywords from the job description to make your resume easy to read and compelling at first glance.

Amanda Peterson began working in the career space at Harvard Law School, where she guided first year law students through the choppy waters of securing summer internships. She worked for over a decade as an HR Wellness Trainer, promoting employee engagement for corporations, nonprofits, and federal agencies. She currently works as a Career Director for Liberal Arts students through BYU’s Careers and Experiential Learning office.
