"What I Wish I Knew Before My First Internship" with Adilyn McLaws

In May, BYU Connect partnered with Adilyn McLaws, a recent BYU graduate, to discuss lessons she learned during her internship experiences, how they helped shape her career, and her advice for preparing for internships.

1) Finding Confidence as an Intern

Adilyn discussed how she overcame feelings of inadequacy and nervousness during her first internship by viewing it as an opportunity to grow rather than compare herself to others. She encouraged students to put themselves out there, stay willing to learn, and develop strong communication skills. Adilyn also shared a few surprises she encountered while adjusting to a professional work environment.

2) Mistakes and Lessons Learned

Adilyn emphasized the importance of networking when searching for internships. She shared how valuable it is to build relationships not only with coworkers, but also with people in other departments. She also reminded students that making mistakes is a normal part of learning and that even internships you do not fully enjoy can still provide valuable experience and growth.

3) Turning Internships into Career Opportunities

Adilyn concluded the webinar by sharing how her internships helped shape her career goals by teaching her what she did and did not enjoy. She emphasized that internships are valuable opportunities to discover what you want to do, strengthen communication skills, and gain experiences and accomplishments that can help in future careers.
