"More than your Major: Framing Experiences and Skills for Today's Job Market" with Benjamin Dowdy

In November, BYU Connect had the privilege of partnering with Bejamin Dowdy, Brand Manager of Halloween at The Hershey Company and BYU Humanities Alum. Our discussion with Benjamin provided valuable insights as to how to leverage experiences and skills to land a job in today's market, specifically for humanities students.

1) Benjamin's Story

Benjamin began by sharing his career journey, which took many unexpected turns. These turning points acted as stepping stones rather than obstacles in leading him to where he is today. He encourages students to seek and act on counsel from mentors, and most importantly, from Heavenly Father.

2) Nailing a Job Interview

Benjamin shared some helpful tips for nailing common job interview questions. When interviewees are asked the infamous "tell me about yourself" question, they should cover the past, present, and future through the lens of a meaningful impact they had or hope to have. Additionally, interviewees should highlight their experience by indentifying a situation, task, action, and result for each of their skils.

3) The Recipe for Success

Benjamin believes that success comes from believing in yourself, researching and learning, gaining experience, and networking. He attributes his success to these "ingredients."
