"Leading with Integrity: Thriving Among Different Perspectives" with Rick Collins

In October, BYU Connect had the privilege of partnering with Rick Collins, Chief Growth Officer at Voyatek, President of the Sacramento Chapter of the BYU Management Society, and Chair of the Executive Board of the BYU Romney Institute of Public Management MPA program. Our discussion with Rick unveiled some valuable insights into how to build productive relationships with people from all backgrounds.

1) Understanding Differences in the Workplace

Rick first shared some experiences he has had in his professional career that taught him how to work well with others. He has found that a team of diverse people can be united through a common mission. Making sure that everyone understands the organization's mission, vision, and core values creates unity. He emphasized that outcomes should be prioritized over ideology.

2) Building Productive Relationships

Rick encouraged modeling curiosity rather than judgment. Seeking to listen and understand will help build bridges. He believes that active listening are skills that can be developed, not traits that some inherit. Anyone can learn to listen and understand others. He expressed the importance of setting boundaries around disagreement and not allowing contempt or personal attacks. He highlighted the importance of pointing out the good that people do and they will do more of those things.
