"Engineer Your Future: Mastering Networking with BYUs Career Resources" with Tony Jewkes

In September, BYU Connect had the privilege of partnering with Tony Jewkes, Career Director at BYUs College of Engineering, who has spent over 25 years helping students, professionals, and organizations succeed through the power of networking and meaningful connections. Our discussion with Tony unveiled some valuable insights into how to network in such a way that creates lasting connections and take advantage of the BYU career resources available to students and alumni.

1) Networking that Creates Real Opportunities

Tony first divulged how networking has shifted in today's professional landscape. The rise of digital platforms, like LinkedIn, has made "cold networking" a viable and successful approach to making connections. Tony encourages job-seekers to be bold when making digital connections. He suggests seeking out employees in fields or companies that interest you and having informational interviews with them. Begin the conversation by asking about how they got where they are, then don't shy away from asking if the company is hiring or will be in the future. It's estimated that four out of five jobs are never posted online, but can be discovered through efficient digital networking.

2) Using BYUs Career Resources

Tony highlighted three online resources available to students and alumni to connect them to potential employers and mentors: BYU Connect, BYU's LinkedIn page, and Handshake. These platforms are far less saturated, which leads to more meaningful connections. Students can find alumni mentors on BYU Connect or find jobs and internships specifically for BYU students on the university's LinkedIn page or Handshake. He encourages all students and alumni to sign up for and be active on each of these platforms.

Tony closed with a reminder that we are all sons and daughters of Heavenly Father and He is keenly aware of us. He will guide each of you in your professional endeavors, because He wants you to go out into the world and build up His kingdom. He encourages all to remember to include God in the journey and trust in His plan.
