In our September webinar, Sydney Townsend, Brand and Digital Partnerships Coordinator with AMB Sports and Entertainment, shared valuable insights into her journey and experiences in the sponsorship and marketing industry. Sydney emphasized how her college years were foundational to her success. She discussed:

A) Courses and Extracurricular Activities
During college, Sydney took specific marketing and sponsorship-related courses that gave her the skills needed for the industry. She also engaged in extracurricular activities like sports marketing clubs and internships, which provided her with hands-on experience.

B) Networking as a Student
Sydney’s approach to networking was proactive and strategic. She highlighted the importance of reaching out to professionals early on, attending industry events, and joining student organizations. One particularly effective strategy was to build relationships by staying consistent in follow-ups and showing genuine interest in others’ work.

2. Daily Responsibilities and Career Development

Sydney shared what her day-to-day life looks like and how she has grown in her career.

A) A Typical Day in the Role
In her current position, Sydney works on a range of tasks from managing sponsorship agreements to coordinating digital partnerships. The skills she relies on most include communication, negotiation, and project management.

Sydney continues to prioritize networking by attending industry conferences, staying active on LinkedIn, and regularly connecting with colleagues and mentors. She emphasized the importance of being intentional about nurturing relationships over time.

B) Pursuing New Opportunities
In terms of expanding her network, Sydney is proactive both within her company and across the broader industry. She encourages being open to new opportunities and making a point to attend events, speak on panels, or collaborate with professionals across departments.

She graduated from the School of Communications in April 2021 as part of the second cohort of the Sports Media program, where her work with the Daily Universe earned several awards. Since graduating, she has worked in hybrid content and copywriting roles at Nu Skin and Nature’s Sunshine.
