“We all drink from wells we have not dug and are warmed by fires we have not kindled.”
-Robert L. Simpson, quoting from a KSL editorial
President Rex E. Lee introduced the BYU Alumni Replenishment Grant for the first time during his devotional on September 15, 1992: Some Thoughts about Butterflies, Replenishment, Environmentalism, and Ownership. He said the BYU Alumni Association had worked to create a scholarship program that honors “the mainstays of our doctrine and of our historical tradition [that] ties back to helping others who come after us, just as we have been helped by those who have gone before.” Honoring our pioneer heritage, the BYU Alumni Association created a scholarship program that echoes the Perpetual Education Fund.
President Lee said that all members of the BYU community have an ownership of BYU, and that this ownership will last for their lifetime. We want replenishment grant students to feel this same ownership. Students who receive a replenishment grant should feel included by BYU Alumni community. The replenishment grant welcomes them into this community. We want replenishment grant recipients to have a sense of belonging which propels them to the help the students that come after them. With the gift of a replenishment grant, BYU students have an obligation to the giver and the students who follow them. An acknowledgement of the gift and the service rendered with an understanding that this gift will provide a future where you can continue the cycle of giving.
How They Work
The BYU Alumni Association directs replenishment grants to needful junior and senior students whose total costs of education may not be met through other financial aid programs. These may be students who are working to put themselves through school and, by so doing, disqualify themselves for grants or loans.
Grants will be awarded annually and vary in amounts up to full tuition. Grant recipients may be invited to participate in alumni activities. They will also be invited to replenish the grant fund once they are financially able.
Serious candidates must meet the following qualifications to be considered:
Earn a minimum 3.0 GPA from all institutions attended by the end of Winter Semester
Demonstrate financial need
Recipients will be eligible to apply each year for another grant under the same criteria.

How To Replenish
The term “replenishment” focuses on the ultimate goal of this program, to encourage you to look for others whom you can help along the way, and hope that, when the time is right and you are in a position to contribute, you will replenish and “pay it forward” to assist others as they complete their journey here at BYU.
